Roman Terracotta Venus Figure
 

      

 

 

   Tall figure of Venus in terracotta. Oriental type, arms extended, opening her veil.
   She stands on a plinth, holding a fruit (pomegranate ?) in her right hand. Wearing a composite headdress, perhaps a diadema, suggesting a Phenician influence.

   Similar figures from the eastern Roman empire can be found in the Louvre.

   Small chips. Head reattached. Two holes filed with brown material, three other still visible. Some encrustations.
   On the back, original circular hole resulting from moulding process.

   Similar figures from North Africa can be found in the Louvre.
   (in Catalogue Raisonné des Figurines et Reliefs du Louvre, Simone Besques, T.IV).

   The figure is not well balanced, and does not stand up on its own.
