Roman military pelta buckle
 

 

      
 

 

   Roman military officer buckle in the shape of the pelta, a shell frequently used as decorative element by the Romans, especially for military creations.
   The cingulum militia - (Belt of the Army) was a symbol of military service and reminder of the duties required by this function.

   For similar examples of buckles, see ref.1138 to 1141 in the catalog of the Vindonissa military settlement in South Germany.
