Classical Antiquities - 600 B.C. - 500 A.D.

Etruscan "tufo" relief of Medusa

A rare architectural relief showing the winged head of the gorgon Medusa, with a necklace of snakes.

The head display a very fine classical style, with ovoid shape, slightly pinched lips, small chin and prominent forehead.
The relief was surely part of a monument, religious or civilian from Ancient Etruria. It can be dated to the IV c. B.C. as a consequence of its classical style.

The sculpture is carved in tuff, from the italian "tufo", a volcanic porous stone covering most of Southern Etruria.
Significant loss to the front of the relief, as visible on our pictures. The carved sides are otherwise very well conserved.

Exportation license from the Ministry of Culture necessary.
