17 th c. French Art pathetic bust of Christ, represented as Vivo Christo on the cross, in agony. The presence in the shoulder of ties for the arms shows that it is the remnant of a large-size crucifix, perhaps mutilated during the revolution.
The chin pointing to the sky, eyes rolling, Christ seems to make his appeal: " My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me ? ". The absence of the crown of thorns, a common feature in the seventeenth century, is not guaranteed. A crown made of metal or wood was perhaps added and is now missing.
The Living Christ is an invention of the Counter-Reformation, extending in a pathetic way the human approach of the Christ figure initiated by the great saints of the thirteenth century, starting with St. Francis of Assisi.
Very nice carving. Gaps visible, important insect borers (inactive), some remains of ancient polychromy.
