Viking / Scandinavian Stele with Interlaced Carvings

Extraordinary stele or architectural element of the Viking / Scandinavian culture. Interlaced strips and vegetal design.

The interlaced design, vertical and horizontal strips with a unique strip rolled into four circles, is typical of germanic / scandinavian art, with a link to Celtic art. Similar decor can be found on various works of art of the Germanic / Scandinavian culture, from instance Merovingian or Saxon buckle plates as early as the VI c.

The upper part of the stele, on the other side, displays a beautiful ornamentation with elements of the Medieval times, i.e. carolingian / early romanesque vegetal fleuronné terminals.

This impressive work of art comes from a renowned Paris public auction sale, and has been scrutinized before the sale by experts in the field.
