Merovingian bronze plate of the VII c. A.D., typical of Northern French / Rhine German design.
This plate is a counter-plate. A complete belt set would comprise a buckle-plate and a back plate.
The ornamentation is composed of four ribbons knotted and interlaced. The decoration is partly cast, partly engraved and punched.
The plate has three very large bosses, one missing, which are ornamental, as the plate is attached to the belt
through three protruding loops in the back.
Heavily silvered, very good conservation except for small cracks in the upper part. Lack of silvering and uneven patina in the upper-left corner.
