Migration Period - Early Medieval Times - 400 - 800 A.D.

Merovingian Head Buckle Plate

A bronze buckle plate dated around 600 from Northern France / Paris.

The plate and the pin are decorated with a geometric design and a human head with a beard.
The buckle plate decoration comes from the mould used for the bronze casting, but the human head was probably
a personalisation created by engraving the wax model.

Human heads on late merovingian artefacts are often considered a proof of Christianity, but this may not be always the case.
