The cloisonné style, an ornementation technique covering the surface of items with garnets or glass inlays separated only by small "cloisons"
   was an heritage of the Hunnic / Steppe cultures which invaded Europe in the IV-V.c. It was soon mastered by Frankish artists.

   Most garnets used to decorate early cloisonné pieces originate from Sri Lanka - an early example of international trade.
   The disruption of the silk trade road by troubles in the Persian region resulted in the decline of this technique, fewer stones being available.
