Romanesque stele with Interlaced Carvings - XI c.


 

 

   Extraordinary stele or architectural element of the romanesque period. Interlaced strips and vegetal design.

   The interlaced design, vertical and horizontal strips with a unique strip rolled into four circles, is a heritage of early medieval germanic art.
   The upper part of the stele, on the other side, displays a beautiful ornamentation with romanesque rinceaux.

   Southern European carvings of the XI c. display similar use of both interlaced and vegetal motives.
   For instance a funerary stele (dated 1060) displayed in a chapel of the Aveyron can be compared to our stele (see picture below).

   This impressive work of art comes from a renowned Paris public auction sale, and has been reviewed before the sale by experts in the field.
