Medieval Europe - 900 - 1450 A.D.

Late Medieval / Renaissance Bombard (early cannon).

Impressive and rare XVI c. bombard or "bouche à feu".

This example of early artillery is the ancestor of the cannon, which has a longer tube and mobility.
In a way, the bombard is closer to our modern mortars. However, it was necessary to install it in a hole in the ground and precision was very poor.

One of the earliest use of bombards in France is the Crécy battle where English troops defeated a French army.

The picture show a similar bombard from a later date, as it is already mounted on a mobile device. It shows however how bombard were used in a vertical angle.

Very good metal conservation. Part of the second handle is missing.
