Medieval Europe - 900 - 1450 A.D.

Late Romanesque / Early Gothic Openwork Beast Mount

Openwork copper-alloy mount with a fabulous beast with an interlaced tail. The openwork background is a composition of interlaced vegetals. The beast is
typical of the medieval zoomorphic ornamentation. The general shape is still romanesque.

This element was probably a casket or book mount, and can be compared to Limoges or British artefacts of the same period, f.i. the Romanesque pendant
of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (57.673), or the fabulous beast mounts of the Musée de Limoges.
