Medieval enameled St-Marc Mount

Medieval Champlevé-enameled mount with a lion as the symbolic representation of St Marc the Evangelist.

Such a mount would have been part of a procession or altar Cross, with the Crucified Christ being flanked by the four Evangelists, on either sides, on top and
bottom. St Marc is usually on the right, as the direction of his the lion's head shows it.

The use of red enamel exclude a Limoges origin, as this particular color was rarely used by Limoges artists, and never massively. The shape of the mount,
a quatrefeuille, is typical of Gothic style.
