Medieval Europe - 900 - 1450 A.D.

Limoges Champlevé-enameled beast casket mount

This mount, most probably from a non-religious casket, belongs to a well-documented series of winged beasts mounts produced in the years 1210-1220
in Limoges. Though standard-produced, each one of them is unique, however, as the design of the beast is engraved and chased by the artist.

Interesting is the design of the beast, a basilisk or a dragon, being part of an imaginary bestiary that is present throughout Western European medieval art,
early medieval, romanesque and gothic periods. The design of the winged animal on this plate is fully gothic.

This particular example is especially beautiful, the original enamel being completely conserved.
