This mount, most probably from a non-religious casket, belongs to a well-documented series of winged beasts mounts produced in the years 1210-1220 in Limoges. Though standard-produced, each one of them is unique, however, as the design of the beast is engraved and chased by the artist.
Interesting is the design of the beast, a basilisk or a dragon, being part of an imaginary bestiary that is present throughout Western European medieval art, This particular example is especially beautiful, the original enamel being completely conserved.
