Medieval Europe - 900 - 1450 A.D.

Late Medieval bishop bronze figure - XV-XVI c.

Bronze figure of a bishop. Solid cast, light to dark brown patina.

The bishop is looking slightly down, and raising one (or two ?) fingers in a posture of preaching.
He is wearing a mitre in the XV-XVI c. style. The chasuble, however, is still in the pre-XVI c.form, as there are no holes for the arms.

A crosier is resting on the bishop right shoulder. It is shaped in the "second form".
The second had, instead of the crook, a knob which was often surmounted by a cross, and was called the ferula or cambuta source : Catholic Encyclopedia

While the drapery is elaborated, the modeling and afterworking of the face and the hands are rather crude. The figure is well composed and balanced, however,
and even displays monumentality. Viewed from several angles (see pictures below), it is equally convincing.
As a consequence, it can be conjectured that this small figure designed as ornament for a larger artwork - as the back shows, is indeed inspired or
copied from a large size statue, which style reminds of German robustness and calm.

   On a wooden stand.

Material : Bronze, natural light- to dark-brown, encrustations. Details somewhat worn out. Traces of gilding ?
   Origin : Germany ?
   Provenance : French art market
   Date : late XV-XVI c.
Dimensions : 11 cm (without stand)

        Ref. : md-069
