Medieval Europe - 900 - 1450 A.D.

11 c. Early Romanesque Corinthian Capital

Very large and heavy Medieval stone capital in the style of antique corinthian capitals.

Originating from Southern France, this capital display a crude manner of Corinthian style with two groups of expanding volutes,
surmounting two registers of protrubing vegetal leafs.

Imitation of Antique material was a common practice since the early middle ages, as the Antiquity was always highly regarded as
   a source of cultural legitimity.
Another reason for copying the Antique, albeit in a new manner, was that genuine Antique materials were used alongside the new
carved stones in building churches and abbeys.

Visible lacks. The conservation is however very good due to the very strong stone used for carving.
