Fine figure of Saint-Agnes from the workshops of Mechlin (Mechelen or Malines), a city of the former South-Netherlands, located in today's belgian Flanders. Between Antwerpen and Brussels, Mechlin was the third production center for retables and wood sculpture along with these cities. Saint-Agnes is easily recognizable with her lamb, attribute of purity, the book and the palm, symbol of the martyrdom of the little saint in the IV th century, here missing. Dressed as a fashionable Renaissance woman, this charming figure is typical of Mechlin production of the years 1510-1530. Known as Malines dolls, they were generally put on display in retables called "closed gardens" (besloten hofjes). Formerly painted with some traces remaining. The figure was restored following attacks of xylophagous insects. The Musée National du Moyen-Age de Cluny in Paris hosts a very similar Saint-Barbara.
