Medieval Europe - 900 - 1450 A.D.

Carved Medieval Angle Capital

A medieval limestone capital part adorned with beautiful large leafs terminated by a crochet, a vegetal hook.

The simple, even abstract style of the carving, make it difficult to determine the style of the capital, which can be romanesque (late XII c.) as well as early gothic.
   A Cistercian origin is possible.

The upper part as well as the back shows that this capital was engagé, not standing alone but part of an angle, with only two carved faces, the left one remaining
completely and the right only remaining in part.
