The Pieta Virgin, supporting the Corpus of Her dead Son, is a tragic moment taking place between the Deposition and the Entombment. For the first time in
the drama of the Passion, the main actors are invited to meditate on Christ's Body, and realize the full meaning of the Savior's sacrifice. Surrounded by many
friends, parents, and disciples of Jesus, Mary is nevertheless alone supporting the Body of the Savior. This isolation reminds us as a tragical reflection of
the Virgin and Child group, where the Virgin is usually depicted as melancholic, if not sad, whereas the Child is smiling and playing.
This group bears many characters of the gothic Pieta : XV c. garments, such as the Virgin's wimple, opulent drapery falling in heavy folds. The Body of the Christ
only relies on one Virgin's knee, a composition known in Germany as early as 1430 (for instance the Unna Pieta, Münster museum).
Losses, insect holes, Christ's legs missing under the knees. Remains of polychromy. Still a moving piece with a finely carved Corpus.
