Medieval Europe - 900 - 1450 A.D.

XVII c. Limoges Enamel Cup, the Crowning of the Virgin.

Round copper cup fully enamelled in Limoges at the end of the XVII c. Painted in camaieu and colors over black ground.

The tondo is painted with a very fine scene of the Crowning of the Virgin. On Her right, the Christ, on Her left, God the Father,
and above Them the colomb of the Holy Spirit.    The back of the tondo is decorated with a small landscape (see picture below).
Around the central scene is a frieze of rinceaux with six angels flying in opposite directions.

Some damaged areas have been poorly re-painted. Three angels have been repainted, one completely (see below), two partly.
The decorated frieze on the back has been restored as well (40% repainted). The landscape scene on the back is untouched except for a part of the sky.
   better restoration is possible.

On the contrary, the central scene is of very high quality in terms of composition and execution, showing the hand of a talented painter,
   not yet identified.
