Medieval Europe - 900 - 1450 A.D.

17 c. bronze figure of the crucified Christ

Modest in size, yet with a strong presence, this very fine Corpus displays all the grace and classicism of the XVII th century, a period of solid faith
and growing individual worship. Although blood and water run from the Wound, the Body and the Figure of the Christ show no trace of suffering.

Jesus seems appeased, as if only asleep, contrasting strongly with XVIII c Corpuses where He is shown in agony.

The afterwork and modeling is exceptional for a figure of this size, as displayed by the chiseling of the hairs and the hammering of the drapery.
Probably fire-gilded, some traces remaining. Four suspension holes, one behind the head.
