Medieval Europe - 900 - 1450 A.D.

15 c. silver shrine plaque

A very rare silver plaque in quaterfoil shape, made of a gold-gilded silver frame and a silver base.

The frame is made of several pieces cast with openwork gothic tracery.
The silver base is hammered and chiseled with a bed of quaterfoils, and four mounted silver stars (the two central being modern and intended,
to hide original holes that were used to mount a figure.

Frame and base have several openings for mounting. Three holes visible on the upper lip of the frame are modern, drilled into modern
pieces of metal for restoration purposes.

Traces of translucent enamel. Some blue and red enamel remaining on the external side of the gilt frame. The silver base also enameled - some red traces visible.

This stunning example of medieval silversmith comes probably from a reliquary shrine, to be identified. Probably French (Paris), possibly Spanish.

Gothic letters chiseled on the back, probably as assembling help.
